Nam Moon Korean BBQ

Nam Moon Korean BBQ located along the shop houses at  Taman Pelangi, is a good place for yummy Korean style meal at affordable prices. The restaurant is spacious and comfortable with several smokeless BBQ grills.

The shop is air conditioned with 2 big screen TV showing latest Korean shows.

The side dishes or banchan in Korean are neatly and beautifully presented in traditional Korean style. What more, you can ask for replenishment for the side dishes, but at limited quantity. Sides dishes consist: Kimchi, potato salad, beansprout, pumpkin paste etc. The number of sides given depend on the number of people eating at the table.

There are several BBQ sets that you can ordered. This set we order consist of beef, bacon and pork chunks. The grilling will be done by the staff unless you specially instruct them that we wish to do the grilling yourself.

The meats are fresh and juicy. It is supposed to eat with cabbages provided. Bean paste and sesame oil are provided, you can dip into either sauce for extra taste.

The kimchi soup came with a claypot and it was bubbling furiously with hot steam. There is a variety of different fresh ingredients. The hot broth tasted all flavours, sweet, sour, salty and spicy. All the flavours were nicely blended together and not overwhelming.

The Tom Yum soup also came in the same state. The spicy and sour taste are really great. Plus the large variety of ingredients, this soup dish is really a must try.

Ginseng Chicken soup with glutinous rice. The broth taste of both chicken and ginseng, each compliment each other well. Plus the chicken meat is substantial for 4 persons. The amount of glutinous rice is just nice, not overwhelming and chunky. The rice totally absorb the ginseng chicken broth, very tasty.

Stri fried pan cake is really really awesome. The pancake is crispy and soft at the same time, not overwhelming oily. This simple dish mainly consist of carrots and vegetables, no meat involve. Dipped with the chili sauce that come with it, simply wonderful. A must try dish.

Korean glass noodle or chopchae/japchae(잡채). It is very tasty dish with subtle sweetness, chewy and pleasant texture. The whole dish consist of mainly vegetables and mushroom, hence it is a very health food plus the dish is not oily too.

This is the Soju,  Hangul 소주, that we ordered. It is consumed neat and the alcohol content is more than 5%. It taste good when you are eating korean BBQ. Try it if you drop by for meal.

End of the meal, each customers will be offered complimentary chilled traditional Korean ginger tea 생강차. Made from ginger preserved in honey, the ginger tea was very sweet and slightly spicy hot. It tasted good.

Claypot noodle & Chicken Rice - Pelangi (Johor Baru)

This is a old school hawker along Taman Pelangi, Johor Bahru, Malaysia. The setup are in plastic table and chairs. Fans are installed so it will not be so hot when you sit in. There are lots of stalls selling different kinds of food. I am going to introduce this claypot stall right at the end of the hawker center.

Hot plate noodle is one of the most popular dish available from that stall. The dish consist of chicken pieces, mushroom, cabbages, egg and of cause noodle. The special thing about the noodle is it is thin and long, not the usual yellow noodle available in the market or supermarket. The noddle is very tender when you chew. The cooking time is just right to get this texture. The brown sauce is more towards oyster cause as it is abit sweet. When you mixed the whole ingredients, together with the peanuts bits, it make the dish more fragrant and crunchy.

Claypot chicken rice is the most popular dish ordered from the stall. The dish taste great. It is served with chicken chunks, Chinese sausage and vegetables. It is served with dark soya sauce, so you will need to mix the whole dish before consuming. The rice is moist and not overly cooked, so there are minimum burnt rice stick by the side of the claypot.

Satay is available at other stalls too. Satay, or sate, is a dish of seasoned, skewered and grilled meat, served with a sauce. Usually grinded peanuts sauce with chili paste and spices as seasoning. The choice of meats include chicken, mutton and beef. The satay are cooked nicely and juicy over charcoal and they really taste great.

Hua Mui Coffee Shop 华美茶餐室 Johor Bahru, Malaysia

Hua Mui Coffee Shop 华美茶餐室

Hua Mui, a local coffee shop located at the corner at the junction of Jalan Trus and Jalan Dhoby in old downtown Johor Bahru. It is within walkable distance from johor custom or city square, around 10 mins if you know the way by foot. I do not recommend driving as the parking space is quite difficult to find especially in the morning. It is a typical Hainanese coffee shop but serve an extensive mix of Chinese and Western menu. This coffee shop is managed by chinese but most of the staffs are local malaysians, hence there are no pork related dishes.

Upper level after renovation

Side view

The drinks are in Hainanese style. The tea is sweetened with condensed milk is aromatic and strong. The coffee is thick and aromatic too. Definitely a must try for their drink.

For breakfast, there are freshly charcoal grilled kaya and butter toast, French toast, American breakfast, and also nasi lemak. I ordered their "Hua Mui" breakfast ( Top dish) and their big breakfast (Bottom dish) for breakfast. Both dishes cost only $6 - $7 RM.

Their signature dishes are Chicken chop which is a must try dish.

I waited 30mins just to try this dish. The chicken is wrapped around by a layer of crispy skin which had been marinated. The chicken chop is delicious and mouth watering. The flavour is similar to the chicken that the fast food KFC are serving. I really like this chicken dish very much. In addition, there are mushroom sauce if you want additional flavour, but believe me, you do not need that at all. The chicken chop itself is already very yummy.

Aun Kheng Lim Salted Chicken - Ipoh famous Cuisine

Aun Kheng Lim Salted Chicken

Aun Kheng Lim Salted Chicken previously was known as Aun Kheng Lim Coffee Shop. The business had already lasted for 23 years and its still going strong. The chicken they are selling is not the orginial salted flavour but an improved version. It has Angelica (Dang Gui) taste. After years of researching and many attempts, the owner discovered the recipe of angelica salted chicken.

The chicken were cooked and sealed in air tight packaging which allow easy access for tourists to bring home. You will just have to reheat the chicken in microwave oven after removing the chicken from its packaging.

9.30am in the morning and the kitchen is ready for packing of the chicken. This is Chinese traditional bakimg method to bake the chicken. At first, cleaning chicken, marinates it with salt, pepper powder and wrap with waxed paper. Then put it into a big pot, cover with coarse salt, and bake it about 1 hour. The chicken will absorbs the taste of salt and angelica during baking process. The chicken essence is pure and unique.

The chicken used are village chicken (ayam kampung) which is breed locally and is at a better quality. The chicken contain less fat and less oil and the meat are tender. The chicken can serve either Hot or Cold.
When salted chicken served hot, the flesh is tasty and nice. However, when the salted chicken served cold, the flesh has different tastes. It is recommended to eat the chicken by hand instead of cutting the chicken into smaller pieces.
