Workbench Bistro @ Ang Mo Kio

Heartland cafes have been popping up here and there recently to attract neighbourhood crowds. Opening up its 1st branch at a mature estate in Ang Mo Kio, Workbench Bistro offer quite a wide selection of food for lunch and dinner crowds.

What's more, customers can choose from the selection of either Red or Blue velvet Waffle which is quite unique and refreshing to see instead of the usual red velvet waffle.

Starters:

Signature Truffle Fries ($9)

What can go wrong with fries when it was fried with truffle oil?
Parsley and cheese are added as toppings on top of the fries!!

Salted Egg Wings ($12)

Slightly overpriced i think. 6 pieces of mid wings only. Crispy wings with salted egg sauce taste that make it taste fantastically good!!

Aglio Olio with Smoked Duck ($13) - Fusion food!! Sliced Duck meat with aglio olio, slightly wet which i not sure why and taste bland. Not recommended

Aglio Olio with Chicken ($12) - Grilled chicken breast meat with aglio olio. This is better than the duck meat version, but still slightly bland. I wont recommend their aglio olio.

Salted Egg Chicken Burger ($16) - Burger is the preferred choice, Salted egg chicken filling in a burger, definitely better than the fast food version. LOL

Pulled Pork Burger ($16)

Burger stuffed with Braised pork and vegetables. Fries sprinkled with chili powder for extra flavour. Highly recommended

Assorted Ice Cream (From $3.90 onwards)

Differentiate by classic or premium flavours

Waffle with ice cream ($8.70 Premium flavour) This pricing is for normal waffle only

Classic flavour cost $8 thou

Red or Blue velvet Waffle required additional cost......

Takagi Ramen @ Ang Mo Kio

Located at the heartland of Ang Mo Kio, this small little stall sell Japanese Ramen which are affordable yet delicious. Why spend more than $10 to have a bowl of good ramen? Just try it here. Adapted to local hawker style, you just have to order, pay and collect your own food instead of them serve to you.

Condiments are all self service

Chashu-men ($7) : Tonkotsu pork broth with extra Chashu meat. Slightly cost saving if you top up for extra chashu meat. The broth is really tasty and ramen is not overcooked. Add Ajitama for extra $1(really worth it)

Free one serving of refill, you can get

Miso Ramen ($6) - Miso flavoured ramen served with corn

Jiajiamen ($4.50) - Chinese inspired ramen, spicy braised pork serve with ramen and corns. suitable for those that prefer spicy food

Kam Jia Zhuang Seafood 甘家庄 - Ang Mo Kio

At the beginning, when i heard my mum saying she wanted to have her dinner at Ang Mo Kio Blk 202 zi cha stall, I wondered what was that? I have never heard before. Upon checking up on the internet, this place was actually quite famous after all. Hence, i decided to make a reservation.

On the day for dinner, we went earlier before the reservation time. However, due to an afternoon heavy rain, the earlier reservation slot got delay. My family and I had to wait till our table (which were occupied) for earlier group of customers to leave. Worse still, they were waiting for their food to be served!! However, there were 2 empty tables that were not occupied but we were not allowed to sit on those tables as they are "reserved" and kept for other customers. Didn't we made a reservation too?  So, after much debating, we got our seats.

Sweet & Sour Pork ($15 medium) - For a medium size dish, there is quite a lot of pork garnished with pineapple, green pepper, tomatoes and onions. Although the colour was not bright red, yet it still taste sweet and tasty. Pork cubes are not overly fried and the meat retain its tender texture.

Prawn Paste Chicken Wing ($14 medium) - Everyone's favourite dish.  I must say that these chicken wings are juicy on its inside. I can't really taste and prawn paste on the wings outer skin, but the wings are well marinated.

Yam Ring ($18 medium) - Crispy yam ring filled with fresh prawns, mushroom, meat and vegetables. This is one of Teochew's favourite. Yam's sweetness is just right, not too oily on the outside. Fillings are fresh and yummy too. Recommended if you like yam!!

Teochew style steam fish ( $36) -  Fresh promfret steamed with beancurd, tomatoes, sour plum and preserved vegetables. Appetizing sourly soup with fish combination is always to my liking. I can just finish the whole fish myself.

Do check the price of the fish before ordering.

Sambal Kang Kong ($9 medium) - Abit too salty and too flavourful. The mixture is not balance.

Pumpkin Prawn ($24 medium) - One of the recommended dish. The prawns are big and fresh. De-shelled, mixed with flour before frying. Pumpkin sauce is very appetizing and goes well with the prawn. Highly recommended!!!

Crab Vermicelli ( $66 - Price varies with crab market rate) - Another highly recommended dish. Big Sri Lanka crab with lots of roe!!! Main focus is not on the crab but on the vermicelli. The vermicelli fully absorbed the broth which make it so tasty. Although the dish is a bit wet, it does bring out the savoury taste. Must Try!!

Verdict: 4 / 5

Good food at a cheaper price and not too bad service. I recommend this place for dinner or family gathering. Although I was pissed off by how they manage the seating arrangement, but the staffs did not flare up at us. Kudos to them on their service level.

I will come back again to try their other recommended dishes!!

Kow Loon Hong Kong Dim Sum - Ang Mo Kio

Kow Loon Hong Kong Dim Sum is a humble dim sum stall located within the heartland of Ang Mo Kio. This stall is easily missed if you are not a resident of this estate. I managed to drop by this place on a weekday afternoon and noticed that most tables were having their dim sum.

The kitchen occupies two units space, and the workers were busy wrapping dumplings and buns and steaming them on the spot.

Extensive picture menu

Crispy Taro Dumpling, Egg tarts and BBQ Pork Puff (4 for $3.80) - These items are sold separately in quantity of 4 pieces for each type. But you can always ask the nice auntie whether you can mix and match the types that you want to have. I like the BBQ pork puff as it is crispy with sweet pork filling. Taro dumpling tasted normal, no surprise. It is filled with small amount of taro paste with peas and carrot bites. As for egg tarts, taste just right for sweetness and the crust is not too hard too.

Salted Egg Yolk Bun ($3.80) - This salted egg yolk bun ooze out readily once you take a bite. Nice balance of butter and salted egg yolk. Eat it as soon as it is out from the steamer as the bun hardens after few minutes. I must say although this is not one of the best buns that i have tasted, but it is really very good. A must order dish!!

oozing in action!!

Yummy yellow sauce that ooze out after taking a bite

Fresh shrimp cheong fun ($3.00) - Each chee chong fun (rice roll) contain 3 prawns and the chee chong fun are really big in size. Served with light soy sauce, sesame and garnish. It gets harden quite easily hence it is better to eat it when it is served warm.

BBQ Pork Bun ($1.80) - These buns look like those that can be found in Hongkong cafe. Soft and chewy outer texture and you can find sweet and delicious pork filling once you tear open the bun. Wooooo, Yummy!! It's a pity that the amount of pork filling is lacking; otherwise this would be a wonderful bun.

Mouth watering pork meat waiting for me to eat!!

Shrimp dumplings ($3.80) - One and a half prawns are wrapped in each of the steam dumplings. The prawns are fresh and crunchy, sweet juice can be seem dripping out from the dumpling after taking the first bite. The skin of the dumpling is thin and i tasted more prawn than the flour after the first bite. I would recommend this dish!

Pork dumplings aka 'Siew Mai' ($3.00) - Another item with generous filling. The size of the siew mai is not big, but the pork meat is fully stuffed in each dumpling. What's more, you would be able to taste the sweetness of the pork meat too. I won't say that this is the best siew mai, but the freshness and generous amount of filling at such price is really worth ordering.

Chicken Big Bun ($2.00) - This is a super big bun! Lots of chicken meat iswrapped in the bun. This version of chicken bun is slightly different from the usual chicken bun that can be found outside. There is no hard-boiled egg in the bun but you can find a piece of Lap Cheong (Chinese sausage) on top of the big chunk of chicken meat. Chicken meat is dry and lump together, you may skip this with other worth ordering items.

Lap cheong within the chicken bun

Steamed Pork Dumplings ($5.00) - Yes, you did not see any typo error on the price. For only $5, you get a taste on the renowned Xiao Long Bao (Steamed Pork Dumpling). Sweet pork juice can be found within the dumplings. The meat is fresh and tasty too. Eat together with vinegar and ginger to make it tastier

Lots of juice wrapped within the dumpling. Tasty sweet juice which I couldn't bear to waste.

Ginger slices and chilli sauce

Verdict 3.5/5
