Yi Dian Xin Hong Kong Dim Sum (一点心)

Yi Dian Xin Hong Kong Dim Sum (一点心) - Upper Serangoon

Located at the coffeeshop alongside with the popular Heng Long Teochew porridge, Yi Dian Xin Hong Kong Dim Sum can be easily overlook by passing cars or passerby unless you step foot into the coffeeshop itself. This place is just one bus stop away from Kovan MRT, along the stretch of shophouses opposite Ponggol Nasi Lemak, directly next to Astons.

Menu with steam and fried dim sum items.

Glutinous Rice Lo Mi Ji  ($2.20) - This version of Lo Mi Ji is too saucy till the extend the fragrance of the rice could not be tasted. Any coffeeshop which sells Baos and Lo Mi Ji certainly taste better.

Chicken Big Pau ($2.40) - A large big pau with fluffy soft skin, filled with marinated chicken, egg and mushroom ingredients.

Steamed BBQ Pork Pau ($2.00) - Warm fluffy char shiew pau with chewable pieces of sweet bbq pork. One of the very few char shiew bao which i fancy. Recommended dish to order.

Rice Roll with Char Siew ($2.50) - Sweet bbq pork wrapped between thin pieces of translucent rice rolls.

Beancurd Prawn Roll ($2.90) - Deep fried beancurd roll which i find it too oily.

Signature Salted Egg Custard Pau ($3.50) - Freshly steamed  piping warm liu sha bao is certainly the saver this place. Proportion of butter and salted egg yolk is just nice, not too oily or buttery. The filling oozed perfectly upon piercing apart. Highly recommeded, as good as those better liu sha bao tasted.

Siew Mai ($2.80) - Pork filling with no prawn.

Shanghai Xiao Long Bao ($2.80) - Frangant soup within the xiao long bao, best eaten with ginger and vinegar. Though the skin is not extremely thin, but still it's not a bad dish.

Dim sum spread:  $21 for 2 person.Worth it right?

Verdict: 3.5/5
Price: $10 per pax

Yi Dian Xin is a dim sum eatery comparable to the popular 126 and Swee Choon Dim Sum. Though not excellent compared to restaurants, the range, price and quality of food offered is considered good for a coffeeshop standard. If I ever visit this eatery again, it would be for the Liu Sha Bao and Char Siew Bao.

Ponggol Nasi Lemak Vs Chong Pang Nasi Lemak - Which one is better??

Ponggol Nasi Lemak Vs Chong Pang Nasi Lemak

Nasi lemak is a fragrant rice dish cooked in coconut milk and "pandan" leaf. Most of us should had eaten nasi lemak before. When you heard people talked about nasi lemak, they will usually end up eating at ponggol nasi or chong pang nasi. So which one do you think is better?

Ponggol Nasi Lemak
( 965 Upper Serangoon Rd, Singapore 534721)
Closed on Thursday

Located near Kovan MRT, Ponggol Nasi Lemak is very accessible and they offer a variety of ingredients for you to choose from such as the popular chicken wing and drumstick, otah, vegetable curry, fried long beans, fried sotong balls and Ikan bilis. They are usually packed and have long queue during dinner time, and the queue can last till supper time. Be prepare to wait.

Verdict: 3/5

The rice is fragrant, you can smell the pandan leaf from the rice, the timing of the rice cooked is just nice, not mushy. The ikan bilis are crunchy and abit salty . Because of the roasted peanut, it really taste great. I like their otah, its spicy and you can taste the shallots and garlic strongly. Think they add quite alot of these in the otah. Most importantly, it is not overcooked and dry. Ok, comes to the crispy drumstick. I am disappointed in this although alot of people raved about their drumstick and chicken wing. The drumstick is crispy on the outside, but dry and no marination. I do not taste any flavour but only meat. I like their sambal chilies, you can really taste the grinded shrimps but it is not very spicy. Overall, the price is steep too, i pay over $5 for these ingredients. Not really worth the wait.

Chong Pang Nasi Lemak
( Sembawang Rd, Singapore 758404 )
5pm until 7am the next day

Chong Pang Nasi lemak started out at Chong Pang Village Hawker Centre, now they have their own coffeshop located near Chong pang camp. Popular ingredients like Chicken wings and drumstick, ikan bilis, sambal sotong, vegetables and as well as meats like sweet and sour pork.

Verdict: 4/5

I really love the nasi lemak here. The rice is fragrant, not too dry. What i like is their sambal chillis. Spicy and sweet, goes well with the rice. Chicken wings and drumstick are crispy and well marinated. More importantly, they are juicy!! Otah fare not too bad. Overall i find the food here nice but abit oily. For the price, i pay around $4+. The downside of here is the lack of tables and chairs. There are no cleaners to help and clean up the food. Hence you got to do it yourself. Otherwise, this place is definitely the best for cheap and good local food.
