Potbellies - Tiong Bahru

Formally known as Heart of House, Potbellies reopen its doors right at Kim Tian road again with their same values of delivering delicious food and heart warming service for their patrons. A wide selection of craft beers, food, dessert and drinks are available on the menu.

Look, Bottlecaps!!

Step onto bottlecaps flooring as you pull open the glass panel.

The cafe are decorated in vintage style. You get to see old school cups, TV etc etc

Spot the oldies MTV showing on top

Eat with comfort with hook underneath for your bags.

Handmade lightning and other oldies stuff

Current promotions

Plates from our grandparents's era

Checkered flooring

Retro and vintage toys and decorative items on the shelves

Dining table with chequered table top. This is not for decoration only, its the clever idea of the owner for customers to have a match of checkers or other old school games while waiting for food. This is to make their customers avoid using the handphone all the time. Sit back and enjoy a game or 2, laugh it out instead of looking at your handphone all day. Have a game, loser pay for the bill!! Hahahaha

Rootbeer Float ($8) - Rootbeer with vanilla ice cream

oldies cups

Original Wings ( $4) - Crispy and juicy. BBQ and garlic chilli winglets available too.

Otah Pizza ($22) - The weirdest ingredients you would find in your pizza - ikan bilis, otah and cucumber. Thick chunk of otah, generous toppings of cheese together with thin and crispy crust makes this local flavour pizza exceptionally outstanding. The spiciness is just right and adds on a punch to this savoury pizza. You would not stop with just one slice. Try eating your nasi lemak in pizza style!

Pistachio Crunch ($10) - This unique dessert definitely worth mentioning. Bottom layer of nutty pistachio biscuit base topped with light pistachio mousse. A perfect combination of smooth and crunchy texture hit the spot entirely. Overall not too sweet and the vanilla ice cream blends well with it too. Do not leave Potbellies without tasting this dessert.

Recent visit on 26/4/2014:

Potbellies Deluxe Pizza ($22) -  I like this very much, generous spreading of cheese on the top, hams, onions and mushroom as toppings really spice things here. The pizza is soft and juicy, thin crust is very crispy. recommended for pizza lover

Pork Knuckle ($55) - Gigantic Pork Knuckle with a serving of salad and gratin. This dish is highly recommended by the owner. The pork knuckle is marinated the day before and was cooked slowly in an oven to ensure crispy outer layer. The meat is flavoured but slightly on the salty side, but still taste delicious. Sambal chili and mustard sauce are provided, east and west fusion concept. If this is not enough, you still can dip into the brown sauce which was used to marinate the knuckle.

Gratin - Come with the pork knuckle, smashed potatoes and bread

Potbellies certainly serves awesome food for their patron's bellies. This themed restaurant at the heartland of Tiong Bahru is a good place to chill and have a good meal with your friends or family. Though prices are slightly steep, the food and service certainly worth its value. Plus, the serve is good, the staff will on and off ask you for your opinions or have a chat or 2, interesting engagement which i am amuse and at the same time enjoying. Both indoor and outdoor seats are available. Will come back again to try other exciting dishes on the menu.

Shrove Tuesday Cafe - Toa Payoh

Shrove Tuesday Cafe

Another new ice cream waffle parlour makes its way to the heartland of Toa Payoh - Shrove Tuesday!

Lots of unique ice cream flavours ready for your selection. Flavours available on the day of visit are: Mascarpone cheese, Sea salted caramel, Cookies and cream, Rum and raisin, Blackberry and many more. An unusual flavour Raspberry lychee rose gelato was spotted as well.

There is a small selection of cakes and brownies available at the counter display.

Vibrant and cosy setting with wooden furnitures and warm lightings.

Dessert and drinks menu on the wall

Mascarpone Cheese Gelato ($3.00) with Waffle ($5.00) - this home-made gelato was good, sweet-savoury and light. However, waffle was pale in comparison. It was crispy inside out, thus lack the thick, warm and moist features of a good waffle. It was quite 'empty' or airy on the inside. Waffle ice cream slightly pricey considering it at a heartland location. In addition, i feel the syrup used was wrong for such ice cream and waffle flavour combination. Recommended to use honey or maple syrup instead of chocolate syrup.

Mocha ($4.50) - Coffee was intense and good though. The amount of chocolate is not that great, hence the ratio between coffee is more than chocolate. Still, i like this kind of coffee with such strong coffee taste.

Verdict: 3/5
Price: $8

Address: 94 Lorong 4 Toa Payoh, #01-32 Singapore 310094 (10mins walk frm Braddell Mrt)

Opening hours:
Sun - Thur 10am to 10pm
Fri - Sat 10am to 11pm

This cafe certainly has good ambiance for a good cup of coffee or sweet treats after a meal at nearby eatery. It is an ideal place for family, friends and couples to chill over and gather. It would be better if there is improvement in the overall texture of the waffle so that it would be as competitive as its neighbour, creamier which is just few void decks away. Overall, i will recommend for their coffee and Mascarpone Cheese Gelato only.

Hatter Street Bakehouse & Cafe

Hatter Street Bakehouse & Cafe derives its name from the character Mad Hatter in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. It is a new addition to Singapore dessert cafe which offers Artisanal desserts and coffee at Hougang heartland.

Striking hot pink signboard which makes it clearly visible along the road.

Dessert and beverages menu written on the wall

Display of freshly made cakes, tarts, macarons and brownies.

Oh-My-天 ($7.50) - Omg! Outstanding presentation with traces of Oreo from top till bottom of this dessert. Comprising of  Cookies & cream brownie topped with Oreo ice cream and Oreo cookies. Brownie is warm and moist and certainly fuse well with the melting ice cream on top. However, both brownie and ice cream are too sweet which makes this dessert sugar overwhelming.

'Whoa' ffles ($8.90) - The highlight of this dessert cafe! This waffle definitely deliver its 'Whoa' effect which makes me ascertain this as one of the top waffle in Singapore. An awkward yet genius combination of pandan ice cream with gula melaka drizzled generously on top of the crisps and moist waffle makes wonder. Every part of the dish was perfect. Given a chance to have this waffle again, i would want to have an entire one on my own. All waffle ice cream lover should not give this a miss. Other choice of combination includes vanilla ice cream with salted caramel or chocolate ice cream with chocolate sauce.

Indoor and outdoor seats available. Payment by cash only.

Verdict: 4/5
Price: $8

Hatter Street's signature waffle shows that a heartland dessert cafe can produce delightful, quality and pocket friendly desserts and coffee as good as those popular cafes in town.Staff were polite and cheerful as well. I will visit again to try other desserts on the menu.
