Tokyo Secret @ Johor Bahru City Square

Recently opened their outlet at Johor Bahru City Square, Tokyo Secret aim at both Malaysian and Singaporean customers by offering the famous Baked Cheese Tarts.

RM 7.90 for a Cheesetart
RM 8.90 for a Matcha Cheesetart

Can you smell that cheese??

Yeah!!! Finally brought the tarts!

See how creamy both tarts are. Wooooo!! Very buttery taste when you take the first bite. Subsequently , you will be able to taste the cream cheese as you munch.

Matcha version is quite good as well, slightly stronger matcha taste compare to the cheese. It's not to my liking.

Ho Seng Kee - 何成記 云吞面 (City Square)

The famous Restoran Ho Seng Kee in Taman Century had set up another branch near to the causeway in City Square mall, level 6.

The price is alot higher than their shop at Taman Century, handmade egg noodle is still available here too

Homemade Barley drink - slightly sweet, taste great

I ordered their dry wanton noodle with black sauce and chilies. The noodles are springy and texture are just nice. Quite generous with the cha siew and wantons

After mixture look

Soup prawn dumpling noodle, egg noodle is used too in this version. Rather disappointing in the prawn dumplings. It is not as filling compare to other shops that selling wanton. Rather small prawns are used and mixed with pork.

We ordered wanton soups, the wantons are filled with pork meat only instead of a mixture of ingredients. But taste the filling taste sweet nonetheless

Verdict: 3/5

Quite expensive and the standard of the wantons & prawn dumplings does not justify the price.

The Replacement Lodge & Kitchen

About 10 minutes walk from the Citysquare mall, this small cafe is located near the famous chicken chop shop, easily identified by their white colour paint.

Iced Chocolate (RM 16 - bottom left), Iced Mocha (RM12) - Taste sweet and thick

Original Churros (RM12.90) - The churros are coated with sugar and bits of cinnamon. Slightly slimmer compare to those served in Singapore and slightly fluffy too. Well, we ordered peanut butter dips which taste rich and thick. It does not harden after turning cold. There are quite a selection of other flavoured dips like chocolate and salted egg

The Replacement Lodge & Kitchen also served breakfast set and brunch menu. Drop by if you are nearby.

Hiap Joo Bakery & Biscuit Factory - Johor Bahru Malaysia

Decided to try this traditional old school bakery after hearing so much about them. Alot of bloggers had blogged on them so i would not go into further details. Yes, they baked their buns and cakes using firewood in traditional method. Even making of the dough is handmade instead of machinary.

When we reached there about 4pm, the buns are already sold out. Their coconut buns are supposed to be one of their popular item but unfortunately we arrived too late. We were told the buns were usually sold out by 11am. The good news is, you can still join the queue for their signature banana cakes. The cakes were baked by batches and were quickly sold out once they are out from the oven. Hence you will need to wait about 10mins for the next batch.

Large (10 pieces) - RM9.60

Small (5 pieces) - RM 4.80

Verdict: 3.5 / 5

I had a slice of the banana cake that is straight out from the oven and its texture is very moist and does not taste overly sweet. Very crispy outer brown layer as well. I end up finishing the small box of banana cakes and queued to purchase another box again. However when I eat it again on the next day, the cake become too dry for my throat. Overall, I recommend you to eat the banana cake immediately upon purchase.

德星茶餐室 Restaurant Teck Sing (Malaysia, Johor Bahru)

Teck Sing Restaurant 德星茶餐室 is a local Chinese owned restaurant offering a wide variety of Chinese dishes at an affordable prices. Located at Taman Sentosa, which is minutes away from Plaza Sentosa and Taman Sri Tebrau Hawker Centre, Teck Sing Restaurant 德星茶餐室 offer lots of signature dishes. Among them are Paper wrapped herbal chicken.

Coconut, refreshing and cooling. A must to order drink here.

Teck Sing Paper Baked Chicken (RM22)

The Paper Wrapped Chicken 德星药材纸包鸡  was wrapped and baked in paper. While served hot, it is best to tear it apart as you will be able to smell the herbal fragrance. The chicken gravy is thicken with chicken essence and herbal taste. Pour some of the gravy on your white rice, it is very tasty and appetizing.

The type of chicken used is a kampung chicken with tender and juicy meat. Mouth watering meat which make you crave for more after your first bite. Simply a must order dish if you visit the place.

Sambal Potato leaves (RM10)

Fresh and crunchy vegetables served in sambal sauce. The spiciness is not that high so most of you can try this dish.

Spring Oil steam Beancurd (RM8)

We waited for quite a long time for this dish. Guess it was freshly cooked. Overall, this beancurd taste normal and look simple. Should had order other dishes instead. Taste quite ok and fresh.

Dessert - Watermelon!!

I think the amount of food is just right for 2 person. You can order more if there are more than 2 pax. Other recommendation is the curry fish head which is one of their signature dish too.

Verdict: 4 /5

Actually this is not the first time i visited this place, i came here a few years back. The quality and taste of the food remain unchanged which i am not surprise judging from the number of customers visited this restaurant. The best dishes are still herbal chicken and curry fish head which were their signature dishes till now.

Service was quite prompt and i did not have to wait for anyone to attend to my order as the staffs are everywhere and easily caught their attention.

Overall, i quite like this place and will come back here again for their delicious dishes. Highly recommended.

Maco Vintage - Johor Bahru Cafe

Maco Vintage - Cafe Johor Bahru JB

Unfurnished shophouses selling local food are usually seen everywhere along the streets of Johor Bahru, and that is what they are famous for and what Singaporeans are looking for when they visit Jb over the weekend for food trip. Unlike the usual shophouses, Maco Vintage is a fairly good ambience themed cafe which serves French pastry, desserts, coffee and main dishes.

Modern and sleek interior design with widely spaced tables

Prompt service received whenever service button was pressed

Menu

Range of sweet and savoury dishes with very affordable prices

Trio Choco Mille Crepe Cake (RM8.50) - White, milk and dark chocolate layered accordingly from the top till bottom of mille crepe. Not fantastic as it appears due to its lack of texture.

Croissant Smoke Salmon (RM18) - One of the best dish ordered in this cafe. The mini croissants were buttery and crispy, while the generous serving of smoked salmon was thick and fresh. Quite worthy for the price paid for.

Chicken Ham Pizza (15RM) - Thin crust pizza was thin and crispy, taste ordinary.

Waffle (RM12) - Waffle was too chewy with mochi texture. Overall too sweet and hard to chew.

Assorted flavours of Mille Crepe on display

This cafe is very well furnished and thus I had set higher expectation for its food and dessert. Food could be improved to match with its good ambience.

Verdict: 3/5
