Prawn paste wings - nice, can try

Xiao Long Bao - Juicy and tasty

Chicken feet

Prawn dumplings - Quite like this version as their skin is not too thick, just right

根叔美食世家 - Toa Payoh

Owned and managed by a family from Hong Kong. Chef himself made authentic Hong Kong Dim Sum and other dishes that are on par with those that are sold in Hong Kong. Located at the heartland of Toa Payoh market, long queue can be seen from this small hawker stall early in the morning. Recommended to come here before 12pm to avoid disappointment as food gets sold out fast.

Yam Cake with Preserved Meat ($2.20 small)

This handmade steamed yam cake has very smooth and mashy texture that melt in your mouth. It can be easily scooped with your spoon like eating mash potatoes. Traces of yam cubes could be found within the cake, adding on to the texture of it. Fried onions and sesame seeds are sprinkled on top as garnish.

The brown sauce is sweet, the kind that you can find outside. Wonderful combination.

Glutinous Chicken Rice (Lo Mai Kai) ($3.00)

The long shaped glutinous rice is filled with delicious chicken meats, mushroom, salted egg yolk and Lup Cheong (Chinese sausage). Salted egg yolk and Lup cheong mixed with soft glutinous rice give out aromatic fragrant and yet dancing around with my taste buds. Totally love this dish as the glutinous rice is done just right, not too sticky or lumpy.

Fried Bee Hoon ($2.20 small)

Surprising this fried bee hoon is rather tasty. It is not dry but quite moist. The bee hoon is fried with ikan bilis broth, which enhance its taste, together with vegetables.

Prawn Dumpling ($3.00 for 3)

The dumplings are fully packed with prawns, slices of mushroom, carrots and minced meat. Tasty with juicy fillings which i can't stop myself from having more. Really must try!!!

Kow Loon Hong Kong Dim Sum - Ang Mo Kio

Kow Loon Hong Kong Dim Sum is a humble dim sum stall located within the heartland of Ang Mo Kio. This stall is easily missed if you are not a resident of this estate. I managed to drop by this place on a weekday afternoon and noticed that most tables were having their dim sum.

The kitchen occupies two units space, and the workers were busy wrapping dumplings and buns and steaming them on the spot.

Extensive picture menu

Crispy Taro Dumpling, Egg tarts and BBQ Pork Puff (4 for $3.80) - These items are sold separately in quantity of 4 pieces for each type. But you can always ask the nice auntie whether you can mix and match the types that you want to have. I like the BBQ pork puff as it is crispy with sweet pork filling. Taro dumpling tasted normal, no surprise. It is filled with small amount of taro paste with peas and carrot bites. As for egg tarts, taste just right for sweetness and the crust is not too hard too.

Salted Egg Yolk Bun ($3.80) - This salted egg yolk bun ooze out readily once you take a bite. Nice balance of butter and salted egg yolk. Eat it as soon as it is out from the steamer as the bun hardens after few minutes. I must say although this is not one of the best buns that i have tasted, but it is really very good. A must order dish!!

oozing in action!!

Yummy yellow sauce that ooze out after taking a bite

Fresh shrimp cheong fun ($3.00) - Each chee chong fun (rice roll) contain 3 prawns and the chee chong fun are really big in size. Served with light soy sauce, sesame and garnish. It gets harden quite easily hence it is better to eat it when it is served warm.

BBQ Pork Bun ($1.80) - These buns look like those that can be found in Hongkong cafe. Soft and chewy outer texture and you can find sweet and delicious pork filling once you tear open the bun. Wooooo, Yummy!! It's a pity that the amount of pork filling is lacking; otherwise this would be a wonderful bun.

Mouth watering pork meat waiting for me to eat!!

Shrimp dumplings ($3.80) - One and a half prawns are wrapped in each of the steam dumplings. The prawns are fresh and crunchy, sweet juice can be seem dripping out from the dumpling after taking the first bite. The skin of the dumpling is thin and i tasted more prawn than the flour after the first bite. I would recommend this dish!

Pork dumplings aka 'Siew Mai' ($3.00) - Another item with generous filling. The size of the siew mai is not big, but the pork meat is fully stuffed in each dumpling. What's more, you would be able to taste the sweetness of the pork meat too. I won't say that this is the best siew mai, but the freshness and generous amount of filling at such price is really worth ordering.

Chicken Big Bun ($2.00) - This is a super big bun! Lots of chicken meat iswrapped in the bun. This version of chicken bun is slightly different from the usual chicken bun that can be found outside. There is no hard-boiled egg in the bun but you can find a piece of Lap Cheong (Chinese sausage) on top of the big chunk of chicken meat. Chicken meat is dry and lump together, you may skip this with other worth ordering items.

Lap cheong within the chicken bun

Steamed Pork Dumplings ($5.00) - Yes, you did not see any typo error on the price. For only $5, you get a taste on the renowned Xiao Long Bao (Steamed Pork Dumpling). Sweet pork juice can be found within the dumplings. The meat is fresh and tasty too. Eat together with vinegar and ginger to make it tastier

Lots of juice wrapped within the dumpling. Tasty sweet juice which I couldn't bear to waste.

Ginger slices and chilli sauce

Verdict 3.5/5

I like the food served here and the price is affordable too since they are located in a coffeeshop. I will certainly recommend this dim sum stall and will come back again.

Victor's Kitchen - Sunshine Plaza

I have heard so much about Victor's Kitchen and had pass by this cafe many times. Finally, after so many years, i get to try their famous dim sum. Located in Sunshine plaza, along side with the famous parklane wanton noodle, this cafe is always packed with customers especially during meal hours and weekend.

If you are willing to wait, which waiting hour could be quite long, then you get to chance to taste their wonderful handmade dim sum.

HK Summer Iced Tea (冰镇奶茶) $3.20 -  Smooth in texture and rich in flavour. This is their famous iced milk tea. The ratio of tea and milk are in right proportion which i like, with acceptable sweetness. The cup of tea is place in a bowl of ice so that the ice will not dilute the drink and  affect its taste. Very considerate thought for the customers.

Golden Egg Yolk Lava Buns (黄金流沙包) $4.80 - Bestseller

One of their bestseller, the salted egg yolk oozed out from the bun when you take a bite at it. Savoury, buttery and rich in flavour. The buns are fluffy and soft in texture. It is really nice to eat with the filling in it. These buns are a must try.

Oozing egg yolk in action!!!!!

Siew Mai $4.80 - 4 pieces of pork filled dumplings. The pork are juicy and sweet and the fillings are quite generous considered that it is wrapped thinly. Yummy!! I would recommend this dish.

Victor's King Prawn Dumpling (超级虾饺皇) $5.20 - This is another must try dish. The dumplings were sweet and crunchy, it is also filled with 2 whole BIG prawns wrapped within the dumpling!! Wow!!! Usually, most Har Kao are wrapped with  1 or 1 & half prawn in it. Hence, this is really a surprise and enjoyment to me.

Chili Specialty - Don't be deceived by it's look, this is really spicy. I guess it is made up of dry chili and garlic and blend together? LOL, try it yourself.

Steamed Carrot Cake w/ XO Sauce (XO酱干贝腊味蒸萝卜糕) $4.80 - This is one of their specialty dish. On the outside, the steamed carrot cake look like paste. However, after u cut it open, strands of carrots slices lay underneath the paste. This diminished the overall texture of this dish. I only like the upper layer of the paste. Although the strands of carrot are soft, but it just don't match with the texture. Really disappointed. Light soy sauce are poured over the carrot cake for flavour,

Prawn Chee Cheong Fun $4.80 - 3 prawns in each rolls with light soy sauce pour over it.

Golden "Bo Lo" Char Siew Butter Buns (菠萝蜜汁叉烧包)$5.20 - A new item on the menu. You can really smell the butter when it is served hot. Crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy inside. The buns are filled with chunky pork meat fillings.

Did you see the chunky pork meat in the bun???

Nemo's Porridge $4.80 - Sliced fish with preserved egg porridge. A bit bland in flavour but it comes with generous serving of sliced fish and eggs. Porridge are cooked till slightly thicken and mushy texture.

Well, i wasn't expected much since i heard that the standard of food drop drastically. I feel that most of the food here are edible but nothing fantastic. I like the "Bo Lo" Char Siew Butter Buns served here as it is really delicious and fragrant while serve hot. The ice milk tea is also tasty and smoothing.
The service i receive wasn't that great too. For me as a first timer, the "auntie" simply place the order form on the table and leave without any instructions. So i ordered the food that i like to have and "seek" someone to attend to me. The time that i went was after 2pm, after lunch hour, hence by right shouldn't have much difficulty seeking for attention. But it prove otherwise.

Despite all, i still feel that you should come and visit here if you have not done so. I will visit here again if i really have an urge to eat the dim sum.
