Song Fa Bak Kut Teh - Chinatown Point

Opening its 5th branch at the Chinatown Point, Song Fa Bak Kut Teh have made their cuisine easily accessible to the locals and tourists. Public transport such as MRT and bus are just nearby and thus this location draws the office crowd from CBD too. I rushed to queue during my lunch break in order to avoid the lunch crowd. Luck is on my side as i manage to have a table within 5 minutes.

Well, Song Fa Bak Kut Teh has been around for such a long time, they even managed to attract tourists to visit their shops. Since previously I did not have a chance to try their food, so I decided to drop by and decide for myself if it is good.

The place is packed with customers during lunch time, i guess it will be much worse during dinner time!

Have a look at the menu

From main dishes to braised dishes to side dishes and drinks, you will be able to see what they have to offer at a glance

Lots of waiters and waitresses can be seen, hence it is easy to catch their attention

Homemade Barley ($1.80) - Sweetness is just right. The barley are nearly mashed up, hence it is much more easier to drink with the straw

Chili and dark soy sauce are provided

Braised Pig's Intestines ($6.50) - At a glance, it does not really look delicious, but after I took a bite, my mind really blew off. I am bewildered by how clean the intestines are washed, absolutely no intestine smell at all. The intestines are well marinated and braised, the sauce can be tasted when you chew at the intestine. Braised sauce is savoury but not overwhelming. Highly recommended to order!

Premium Loin Ribs ($9.50) - Wow, this is really an expensive premium dish. The meat is very tender, easily to separate the meat from the bones. Well marinated and tasty too. The soup is very peppery and taste of garlic and peppers. However, the broth lack of the sweetness from the meat which is what I am looking for. I am really disappointed with it. This is just a dish which the ribs and the soup are prepared separately. Totally no fusion at all.

Remember  to return the wet tissue if you do not require it, it will be deducted off your bill

There are 2 queues which are operating simultaneously, one is located at the front door while the other queue is located in the shopping mall itself. I will suggest to queue inside the shopping mall since there is air conditioner compared to the front door queue.

Queue inside shopping mall

Verdict: 3.5 /5

The taste of the food is fairly usual, I do not feel that there is any "wow" factor. Although the pig's intestines and the loin ribs are good, it somehow lack the flavour that I am looking for.

Service provided by the staff is prompt and courteous, i am surprised since they appeared to be very busy and chaotic at times. Good job there!

Considering the price of the food sold here, I find it abit steep. Overall, I may not come back here again. Recommend for first timer only.

New Soon Huat Bak Kut Teh 新順發肉骨茶

 新順發肉骨茶

New outlet jjust recently pop up here at Serangoon road. It is crowded when i reached here at a public holiday night. Lots of people are waiting for table or their food. Hence i decided to try out the bak kut teh here.

Delicious You Tiao ($1) and iced Ai yu ($2.20 Honey jelly) - You Tiao are fresh and chewy when eat it original, when soak in Bak Kut Teh soup, it quickly soften and absorb the soup quickly. Really love it.
Iced Ai Yu, abit sweet and sliced of the honey jelly can be found and drink through the straw

Traditional Bak Kut Teh ($6) - This version of Bak Kut Teh is Cantonese style which is the herbal side. Trace of pepper can be found when drinking the soup. You can find gou qi zi, golden mushrooms, Tau Kee, a few pieces of sliced Pork liver and pork. Surprising thing is that the pork served are loin instead of pork rib which i preferred. Overall taste, faint herbal taste, the soup is tasty since the broth are cooked by using pork. Other than that, i do not find anything special. Oh, free flow of soup too upon request.

Dry version of Bak Kut Teh ($7) - Surprised that i can find a dry version which i wonder how am i suppose to eat. Instead of using lots of broth to cook the pork, soy sauce and lesser amount of broth are used to cook the meat. With the additional of dry chili and lady fingers, the dry Bak Kut Teh is alot more spicy, abit sweet due to the soy sauce and heavy after taste. It is nice to have that dark sauce to eat it with white rice, really make the plain white rice alot nicer. Again, i did not see my pork rib being used or serve in this version. Really disappointing. Fried sliced ginger are sprinkled on top of the Bak Kut Teh.

Sesame ginger chicken ($6) - I really like this dish alot. Very tasty and delicious. Sliced ginger and chucks of chicken meat are dump into the claypot and cooked with dark soy sauce, making the broth of this dish very appetizing. I like it especially because of the well cook chicken meat and the sauce which goes incredibly well.

Verdict: 3 / 5

I feel that the food here is generally normal, maybe for the exception of a surprise element in the dry version of Bak Kut Teh which lasted for awhile and cost $1 more because it is special and the better tasting Sesame ginger chicken. Hence the rating of the food is at the normal range. I still prefer the sesame ginger chicken that Bak Kut Teh.

Service here is slow and very slow. The reason of the long queue is because there is a shortage of staffs serving the customers, tables are left unclean with bowls and left over all over the tables. Only when big groups of customers swam in then the tables are cleared. Food serving time is slow too, maybe it is due to the time taken to cook individual pot of Bak Kut Teh?? Well, i am not sure of that.

Price is at the acceptable range, $6 for a bowl of Bak Kut Teh is abit higher than normal compare to what you can find in a hawker centre. But there are no GST and service charge, hence it is still reasonable.

I do not think i will come back again. Unless under special circumstances.

Outram Park Ya Hua Rou Gu Cha - 欧南园亚华肉骨茶

欧南园亚华肉骨茶

Located at the south of Singapore near CBD area, one can actually find this shop quite easily. Introducing the best Bak Kut Teh in Singapore invention. Outram Park Ya Hua Rou Gu Cha. There are 2 type of  Bak Kut Teh, differentiate by the colour of the soup base, either white or black soup. This shop sell the white soup base. White soup base are Teochew's cooking style, taste more peppery, while the black soup base are more towards herbal direction, Hokkiens style. The soup is made from boiling Pork Bones with garlic and pepper.

Menu - I manage to take a shot

Fried Dough Stick - What are this for?? To dip into the soup and you can choose to eat it hard with the soup or let the dough soften and eat it soft, tasting the full juicy taste of the soup.

Spare ribs

The soup serve here is very good. It has a sweet savory and peppery taste. Savory that comes from boiling the pork bones, peppery and not over powering. The ribs are cooked until the meat texture are tendering nice and full of flavour too. Try eating the rice with some of the soup, the rice just taste wonderful. Good news to all, the soup are refillable. You can just request for refill as long as you can finish them. I simply just request the soup to be fill up in my bowl of rice. YUMMY!!

I will recommend to select lean spare ribs as the meat are more tender and the proportion of the fats are lesser. Of cause, one can choose to have the fatty spare ribs. Up to individual choice.
I also like the braised peanuts here. It is soft and sweet with the skin still being intact.

Braised pig intestine - The intestine are clean properly, you can hardly find any foul tasting texture after chewing one bit. The intestine are braised in dark soy sauce and herbals, you can taste Anise which can cover any dis-likable favour.

Salted Vegetables - Typical Teochew dish. The vegetables are not very salty, just at the right amount. The vegetables are crunchy too. It is best to eat with rice.

Braised Pig Trotters -  Soft and tender, the meat and fats simply melts in you mouth when you put a piece of the meat into your mouth. The braised sauce is a bit sweet, making one to eat more and more. This is definitely a must to order dish.

Braised Tau Pok - Beancurd which is flattish and square with a brown, wrinkled skin and soft, spongy interior. The Tau Pok are cooked in dark soy sauce, not over cook and the texture is soft and chewy.

Chye Sim - Nice, fresh and crunchy. No argument on this dish

Mee Sua - Soft and tender texture, eating with the soup, you can actually find that the soup taste differently from the pork rib soup. One soup but different eating styles. I think the contributing factor is the fried onions that are added to the Mee Sua. Bringing the taste of the soup to a different level.

Good tasting Bak Kut Teh with great service to too. Staffs are polite and attentive to customer's needs. They are prompt to refill your soup. Food are served fast too. Simply no delay. Boss are around to help out too, and do not put up any air around him. Good food, great service. Simply wonderful combination!!
