Soup Restaurant - Nex Outlet

A short food summary on Soup Restaurant as i think most Singaporean are familiar with this restaurant and especially the Samsui Chicken which are famous.

Samsui Ginger Chicken (Large $32.90) - Signature dish from this restaurant. The chicken meat are tender and juicy, fresh!!. Eat with the minced ginger to give you a wonderful taste combination. A really must try dish.

Fried Rice - Delicious and fragrant are the 2 words to describe this fried rice. The rice is cooked finely with oil and right amount of heat hence the rice does not stick together. Generously serving of seafood such as prawns and slice fish.

Homemade Tofu with Spicy sauce ($9.90) - Deep fried tofu with chili sauce poured over it. Sprinkled with fried onions and spring onions to enhance the taste. Chili sauce is starchy and spicy. Really good for chili lovers. Fairly simple dish with no "wow' factor.

Claypot Salmon (small $15.80) - It is fried salmon stir fry with black pepper in a claypot with garnishes like green pepper and onions. I think the salmon are cooked separately as the claypot look super clean with no burnt area. Hardly taste the black pepper. Really disappointed with this order.

Verdict 3.5/5

Only the signature dish like the Samsui Chicken is delicious, for the rest of the dishes taste normal. I am not fascinating by the food and the price is fairly steep.

The service is slow and not good. Staff took wrong order and i have to wait for very long for my food to arrive. It is also hard to catch the staff's attention if I need to refill my tea or asking to take order.

Overall, i won't come back again unless there are really no other restaurants for me to visit.

Back to the 60's chinese coffeeshop setting

Kopi, thick toast and half-boiled eggs ($4.90) - Thick toast was soft and fluffy on the interior with generous spread of home-made kaya and a thick slice of butter.

Typical Hainanese breakfast of early days

Hainanese chicken Rice ($4.00) - Both the steamed white chicken and roasted chicken were tender and rice was fragrant yet not oily. Overall food was on the salty side.

Pow Sing Restaurant 报喜 (Serangoon Garden)

Pow Sing Restaurant 报喜

I think most of the locals in the neighbourhood know about this restaurant since they had been here for more than a decade. They are famous for their Hainanese Chicken Rice and Peranakan food and they are usually packed during peak hours.

Steam Chicken - tender and juicy, the skin of the chicken is smooth and you can see the skin, gelatin and chicken meat clearly separated. The meat is not hard and dry which you find at other stall, but soft and tasty.

Prawn Omelette - Egg are crispy with big fresh prawns, taste wise fare not too bad

Curry Fish Head ($25) - I think that the style of cooking is more towards Indian curry. Very strong curry powder taste which make it more like the indian style. Lots of vegetables like lady finger, tomatoes and brinjal. The fish head is fresh and the meat is firm.

Operating Hours: Lunch – 11am to 3pm; Dinner – 5pm to 10pm

Tel: 6282 7972 / 6286 4813

Verdict: 3.5/5

Price: $20 per pax

Everything are chargeable here including plain water @ $0.30. However, the food is good and price is affordable. I may dropby again to try other dishes.

Ming Kee Chicken Rice & Porridge (Bugis Street) 明记鸡饭粥 - Bishan

Ming Kee Chicken Rice & Porridge (Bugis Street) 明记鸡饭粥

Located in a heartland coffeeshop, 5 minutes away from Bishan MRT station, you will be able to taste this wonderful chicken rice in BishanThis stall only sell white chicken and they do not hang their chicken unlike other stalls. All their chicken are bathing in ice water in the plastic box.

Very delicious white chicken with gelatin like skin and fats on the chicken. I guess it could be because of the ice water that the chicken are soaking in. Nice and tender flesh, the meat is very juicy too. The rice is very fragrant and not very oily too. Taste of chicken too. If you notice, the chicken meat is fat and thick, unlike other stall which fatten the meat, this stall is really generous on the serving.

Can you see the layer of gelatin ??

The chili is a bit disappointing. It is watery, and sweeter without mince ginger to eat with the chicken.

Opening Hours: Daily 10 am to 9.30 pm

Verdict: 4 / 5

Price: $3.50 onwards

Super delicious chicken rice serve by this stall. I simply love it. Per plate of chicken rice start from $3.50, cheap right?

Qi Le Boneless Chicken Rice (Ang Mo Kio S11)

Qi Le Chicken Rice

Situated in populated Ang Mo Kio, Qi Le Boneless chicken Rice differentiate itself from the many chicken rice stall by giving big bowl of soup free of charge. It is very tasty, certainly a must eat dish. During peak hour like lunch time and dinner time, the queue is especially long, queuing is a must. Must be patient. The staff is patient and will explain to you if you are unsure what to order.

The stall serves roasted chicken and white chicken, but i recommend the white steam chicken as it is nicer. The meat is soft and tender, not over cooked and tough. You will be able to feel the smooth texture of the meat. Simply heavenly. I have the urge to have 2nd round. More importantly, all the bones are pick out, you do not have to do it yourself. A meal will cost about $3.50.

The soup is not the usual MSG-filled soup that you tasted at other stall, but soup full of ingredients. They have different soup everyday. For example, the lotus roots and peanut soup is filled with big peanuts or chicken chunks with peanuts. You will be able to ask for more soup too!!! Isnt it good?  This really show that the food is really cook with passion and to serve the customers.

The chicken rice served is fragrant and taste alot like chicken. Not so oily, the moisture is just nice. Eat with their chilli sauce give u a surprising combination which is hard to describe. The chili sauce has gotten a good balance of chilli, lime, garlic and ginger to give it a well-balanced taste.

Verdict: 4 / 5

Price: $4+

Service is fast, queue move fast too. Food is really fantastic and taste really really good. I really love the chicken rice here.
